Pre-Surgery Knee Joint Replacement Exercise Program
Thousands of people, young and old, prepare for knee joint replacement surgery every year in the U.S. Sometimes the surgery is immediately necessary due to an accident and other times the result of years of pain with arthritis. If the latter is true, quality of life has probably diminished because the surgery is usually recommended as a last resort.
Physicians, rightly so will advise patients to delay the replacement until absolutely necessary because the life of the prosthetic can be as little as 10 to 15 years. If the paitient has the surgery too early, the surgery might be repeated which is something most would rather not endure. The delimma is the decision to wait until the pain is to great to endure, or have the surgery and face the possibility of another surgery in the future.
Some of the factors to consider include body weight, fitness level, age, medical history, and lifestyle. The decision can be a Catch 22. If you wait, you give up several years of quality of life, and if you go ahead and have the surgery, you may repeat it again in 10-15 years. I may not have the answer to that delimma, however, following is information that may impact your decision.
It has been my experience over the past 10 years that the majority of patients with a knee replacement are deconditioned, carrying more body weight, less flexible, and weaker due to reduced activity secondary to knee pain. Finally, the decision is made to have the knee replaced and the patient is in the worst shape of their life. The next several of weeks after surgery is spent on a walker or cane, where the wrists, elbows, shoulders and the uninvolved leg are stressed beyond their ability. Sometimes the stess is so great that injury to these areas ensues. The patient, in addition to the physical therapy for the knee is now dealing with new injuries. The level of stress and fatigue is greater and the success of therapy is compromised.
Proper preparation prior to the surgery greatly increases the fitness level of the patient and the rehabilitation process. The Knee Joint Replacement Pre-Surgery Exercise Program is a comprehensive program specifically designed to prepare the entire body for the surgery and the rehab process. This program is a must for every one considering knee joint replacement.
It is my opinion that as soon as your quality of life begins to diminish, steps need to be taken to reduce any negative changes. Can you prolong the time before quality of life diminishes?, maybe, with the Knee Joint Replacement Pre-Surgery Exercise Program. Even if the Program does not increase the time before the replacement, it will defintely speed up the rehab after surgery and improve the post surgery results.
